You know those old home decor antique pieces, the ones that are distressed, aged and reminds you of Fixer Upper decor? Those beautiful pieces that Joanna carefully picks out for her client, the rustic country decor that we all love.
To buy those types of pieces up here in Canada are very expensive, but you can make them yourself.
Once you find what you want to work with….let’s say a wooden tray that can be placed on an Ottoman with a cup of tea and flowers, choose two contrasting colours and with the addition of Americana Decor Crackle Medium, you can have an aged home decor piece in a couple of hours. Most of the time spent is drying time, so you can go ahead and enjoy that cup of tea.
Not only can you use Americana Decor Crackle Medium to age home decor pieces, but in artwork as well. I recently completed this fun little piece named “How to Paint a Tree in a Winter Scene with Cracked Snow” and I used crackle paint and crackle paste for added texture. If you don’t want to use a topcoat and create just a cracked glass effect, you can use One-Step crackle as shown here.
I will admit, Joe is not a fan of anything crackled. But a hint of it in the corners and with just the right colours, it can add that little extra detail that can bring your home decor piece to the next level.
You can find home decor pieces to age in many places such as thrift shops, flea markets, Value Village, recycling shops and Taleze. Take something that was unloved and turn it into something you’d be proud to display in your home, or give as a gift.
Whether you want to user crackle medium for a whole piece or maybe some edges and corners, practice in a heavy duty art journal, on heavy watercolour or bristol paper so you can make notes on the colours, technique and the working environment (humid air vs dry air will affect the drying time). Once you’ve practiced it, then you can move onto your special piece.
For this technique lesson, I’m using Americana Decor Crackle Medium and you can also use DecoArt Crackle Paint as an alternative.
