In part 3 of the Junk Can Be Beautiful series, I’m going to be creating mixed media collage art with jewelry.

Not any jewelry, broken, defective, but pretty jewelry.

To make things even more special, this is the 4×4 piece that I will be giving to my Art Place swap partner.

When I sit down to create mixed media collage art, if I’m feeling centred and organized, I’ll pick out my main piece.

For this design, I wanted to include jewelry in it, and broken pieces I have in abundance.

Why?

When I’m playing with Mia, she usually gets her head caught in my necklace and snap!   there it goes.  Sometimes I’ll buy a piece that looked nice on the display, but doesn’t work with any of the outfits I try it on with.

After choosing my main piece, I like to think of a quote to help guide the process and for this piece, I used “manifest“.  I thought of that on my afternoon walk with Joe and Mia, thinking that flowers will be blooming in a few months.  What does manifesting have to do with blooming flowers?  see what I did there 🙂

flowers that are blooming = growth = manifesting

Makes sense right?

That’s how the idea came about using jewelry pieces as flowers.

Here’s a quick summary of the creative process you’ll see in the video.

  • a bright sunny colour painted on a piece of corrugated cardboard with the top paper layer peeled off
  • left over scrap cardboard cutout for texture in the background
  • a piece of burlap for the grassy area
  • to hold everything together, a layer of Triple Thick Gloss Glaze
  • the quote stamped on a piece of the peeled paper
